Accessibility Compliant Website for Housing Organisation

Shout TMO are a tenement management organisation based in Manchester which required a new design and build of there existing website with additional functionality including a news/blog section which could be shared across multiple social media platforms. More importantly they required the new site to be accessibility compliant.

As regulations have changed in 2018 requiring any organisation that attracts government funding require there website to be WCAG 2.1 AA compliant.

This requires the site to adhere to many stringent guidelines including all text must have a zoom feature to enlarge text to 200%, the site can be navigated through a keyboard and not be reliant on a mouse. For people who have impaired vision the site must have high contrast and grey scale capabilities. Generally all colours must be of a high-contrast especially for fonts which WCAG 2.0 level AA requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text.

There is also a whole host of additional requirements including descriptive ALT tags for all images and use meaningful headings and labels, making sure that any accessible labels match or closely resemble the label you’re using in the interface, the site must be able to be correctly displayed on various displays including tablet and mobiles.
